Yesterday my son and I spent literally the whole day laying down, fighting a nasty cold. It was a less than productive day but I enjoyed the cuddle time. :)

Recycling...

So I am afraid that some of the parents in my daughter's class are going to think they need to do Secret Santa for us... They keep seeing me digging around in the recycling bins at the school. I PROMISE we are not poor! Just looney! :) I even have a grabber now (Thank you Grandma!!) and am so much more efficient!
I was thrilled to find that the library was getting rids of tons of books in the recycling bins today!

I love reading and my kids love listening to stories. Most of these are chapter books. I will either read them to the kids or save them for when they are a bit older. I can't believe they didn't donate them somewhere... that bugs me a bit, but I am glad that we will now get to enjoy them. :)
I also found a bunch of great coupon inserts. Yay for having a grabber!
We also hit Saver's today. My belly is finally starting to grow, (I have my ultrasound tomorrow!!) so I am needed more comfortable clothes. Maternity clothes are notoriously expensive. I have been blessed to have some good friends give me pants, shirts, bras and such that they no longer need. So all I needed to do was supplement the shirts and church clothing.

I found all of these great clothes plus a pair of gloves for my daughter and a zip up binder for my coupons and paid just 1/10 of what I would have had to pay at full retail! I love Saver's!!

Overage is your friend! So is competition!

My son and I hit Walmart today to double some coupons and grab some deals as usual. I just love happy surprises! I had planned to ad-match the Chex cereal with Macey's for $1.49 per box. As I planned to buy a lot, I was anticipating a long time at the register because of all the necessary overrides. How great it was when I went down the cereal aisle and found that Walmart was being competitive and had lowered their price to $1.48! I wouldn't have to price match them!! Plus, they included Honey Nut, which Macey's didn't. I grabbed the last two of those and then lots of corn, rice, and wheat Chex. I don't normally clear shelves and advise against it except when circumstances dictate otherwise. :)
I couldn't pass this up, so I ended up getting a total of 38 boxes. I would have gotten 8 more, but my sis in law also happened to be there, so I talked her into getting them and gave her the rest of my coupons. There's my good deed Santa. ;)
I of course used my -$1/2 coupons and got all of these boxes for $.98 each.

What else did I get??
2 Milk $1.99 @ Walgreen's
-.75/1 1 gal milk (doubled to $1)= $.99 each!!
Bananas .33/lb @ Buy Low
1 bag Salad .78
1 Frigo Light String Cheese $3.48
-.55/1 Frigo (doubled to -$1)= $2.48
1 Welch's juice cocktail $2.00
-.75/1 Welch's juice cocktail (doubled to -$1= $1.00)
2 Yoplait 8 pk yogurts $4.00 each
-$.50/1 Yoplait multipack (doubled to -$1= $3.00 each or .37 per 6oz cup!!)
2 Aquafresh Travel size toothpaste @ .97 each
-.50/1 Aquafresh travel size online coupon(doubled to $1= -.03 each!)
1 Carefree Pantiliner  .94
-$.50/1 Carefree product (doubled to -$1= -.06!!)
4 Campbell's Cream of Chicken Soup @ .58 each
-.40/4 Campbells condensed soups (doubled to -.80/4= .38 each
Total Retail Value: $143.82 (w/ tax)
Total Spent: $55.64 w/tax
Not quite to my 75% goal, but I am happy with it. Overage helped me today. Whenever possible, you want to use coupons that will leave a little extra to apply toward your total balance and items that you don't have coupons for, like the salad and bananas.
I missed out on my Zone Perfect bars that I wanted. Need to get in earlier next week. :)

Consolation... A rough day at work

As long as I look at my couponing as my career, it makes days like today bearable. I took my sis in law to Walgreens as we both needed toilet paper and she needed a few other things.
I had both plans all worked out down to the penny. Mine ended up being simple enough... or so I thought.

Except that I didn't realize you had to use an in-ad coupon to get the gum for .79 each, so I had to get a refund. And here's the real heart breaker: I had put my $1/2 Mars Holiday candies coupon into a walmart envelope as I had looked for them there to ad-match since Walgreens was all out of the little Snickers Nutcrackers last time. And I guess I didn't put the coupon back into my Walgreen's envelope. Well of course they had restocked and I had no coupon to use! No FREE chocolates for me!!! :( Yes, it will take me a few days to get over that one.
Next, we had to change my sis's plan last minute when she reminded me that she needed toilet paper. I have been suffering from serious baby brain lately and looking at my paper, I only figured on the total of the 3rd transaction we'd do. So we thought she'd only have to pay around $10. I didn't figure in the other two transactions we'd have to do.
The cashiers up front tried to be helpful by offering to have us check out up there instead of in cosmetics, my comfort zone. We got split up and I couldn't keep track of both of things at once, so hers didn't go as planned. We got out of the store and I was really upset thinking she had way over payed. We went back in and had all of it refunded and started over. The second time around, she ended up paying $.01 more than the first! I was beside myself!!! Until I got into the car with all the receipts and figured out my mistake. Heart wrenching!!!!
The only consolation I could find for us was that if she had bought just the diapers and toilet paper that she needed, she would have spent $3 more than she spent at Walgreen's today, plus she ended up getting $15 in FREE products on top of what she needed. I'm holding onto that fact with my whole, tired, worn out little soul. :)
A rough day at work. We all have them. :)

Buy Low and Reminders!

The kids and I hit Buy Low in Provo today since we had to go up north for a doctor visit anyway. As part of my reaffirmed commitment to couponing, I have vowed to hit Buy Low every week to make sure we have plenty of fresh fruits and veggies in our home. Buy Low and Rancho Market are by far the most economical stores I have found for produce!

My budget was $10 but I only ended up spending about $6.50. I grabbed toilet paper at $1.08. I hated to pay that for it but needed a bit to tide us over until I can get a deal together this weekend.

Walgreens and Walmart

Since I jumped back into my coupons a couple of weeks ago, I have made every effort to work smarter, not harder and to be much more organized and scheduled to reduce my stress levels and not burn out again. So far, so good! These are important lessons for anyone wanting to go the coupon route! Learn them now and save yourself not only time and grief, but lots of money along the way!
This week I hit Walgreen's on Monday. I was late getting there and not able to get all that I wanted, but I did alright.
I used my left over $4 RR from last week to get all of this for just $.48. I will make money on the Finesse hair products as there is currently a mail in rebate form for $2.

I was able to take my sister in law shopping with me today. It was so awesome sharing my experience and knowledge with someone I care about. We hit Walmart first to double some coupons and match some ads.

I went $9 over my intended budget for the week but I am ok with it considering what I got! We finally have a variety of snack options at home and I am finding it much easier to breathe as I look at my shelves today.
I got the new grocery ads today and there isn't much to be excited about. A few deals at Smith's that I will jump on at the beginning of the week, but I am thinking that I will have the majority of my grocery budget to put towards coupon doubling and other miscellaneous things my family needs for our home.
I took my sis in law to Walgreen's after Walmart and was able to help her get 2 Gillette Razor Comfort Packs, 2 Christmas Pencils, 1 Mission Foot Cream and 1 Softlips, all for just $10.35 with tax. Less than it would have cost her to get just one of the razors at regular price, before tax!!!
We will head back to Walgreen's on Thursday to use the $4 Register Rewards she has leftover from the shopping trip. She still thinks I'm nuts with all this madness I engage in, but now she appreciates it and sees why I do it. I think I have a convert! ;)

Today's Adventures!

I have slacked off for about a month and it has begun to really show in our bank account and on our shelves! I am now repenting!!! I have been coupon hunting this week and will finish clipping and filing tomorrow. Today I hit Walgreen's in Springville to take advantage of some great deals. My favorite cashier, Albrie was there. You can find her at the cosmetics counter. She will help you and save you soooo much money!!
I had a plan laid out and she helped me spend lots less than what I had expected to spend, plus I got twice as much product as planned.

I did several transactions! All using my Capital One Rewards card. We have been using it for everything lately and paying it off every two weeks, even though I have 0% interest for a year. Best to get in a good habit. Credit rewards are just another way to save/earn money on things you need to buy anyway!

We also hit Macey's today.
Thankfully, the Chex deal will continue through tomorrow. I wasn't able to round up enough coupons last week to take advantage of it. With all of my scavenging this morning though, I had enough to get 12 boxes!
You have to buy 3 boxes to get them for $1.49 each. They have a vendor coupon at the registers. I stacked on top of that (6) coupons for -$1/2 Chex cereals. Two of them I printed online, the rest I found in the bins. This made them $0.99 each.
The Nabisco crackers were $1.69 each. I used an online coupon for -$1/2 Nabisco Crackers, making them $1.19 each.
The Lindsay Olives are still just $.69 per can!!! Stock up!!! I got another 10 cans to supplement our supply.
The whipped topping is .69 each, limit 2, with in-ad coupon.
The cream cheese is .89 each, limit 2, w/in-ad coupon.
The marshmallows are .79 each. They only come this low at this time of year in my experience, so I stocked up and will likely get more to have on hand. Remember, if you get more at the low price now, you will save money in the long run, avoiding full price!!
Total Paid: $30.50
A savings of just over 50%.
I have $10 left in this week's budget. I will hit Double Tuesday at Walmart tomorrow for the first time in ages. I only plan to do a few doubles this time. Most of them I will do with next week's budget. I have two ad-matches to do:
Rancho Market
1 gal milk $1.99
Bananas 3lb/.99
Then Wednesday I will hit Buy Low since I am heading into town anyway and will see how much produce I can get with around $5. It will be interesting... :)

Yesterday's Purchases

I got all of my shopping done yesterday. It was an adventure. No power in the morning. Locked myself out of my house. Became a a breaking and entering expert. Finally got on my way and got a lot done. The day continued to be hectic, followed by a night of my daughter throwing up. But dang it! The shopping is done!! Except for the filter exchange I now have to make...
I hit Walgreen's first to use a $3 RR that needed using. I ended up getting Kraft Parmesan Cheese, for $1.11. They were out of the cheese I wanted.
Then I hit Walmart to do lots of ad matching!
The following items were regular Walmart price:
Hidden Valley Ranch $3.74
-$1/1 Hidden Valley Ranch= $2.74 (Not as good as when they were on roll back, but we needed it and this was definitely the best price around. I am a bit of a ranch snob....)
Kikkoman Soy Sauce $1.74
-$1/1 any Kikkoman Soy sauce (I guess everything is going up these days... 6 months ago, this same item was $1.46 retail.....)
The Parmesan is the one from Walgreen's.
The following are my Rancho Market ad matches:
Roma Tomatoes 2 lb/.99
Avacados 4/$1

Buy Low has some fabulous deals this week! Here are my ad-matches:
French Bread .50
Red or Green Leaf lettuce 3/$1
Radishes and/or Cilantro 3/$1
10 lb Russet Potatoes $1
Celery stalk 3/$1
Cucumbers 4/$1
Milk $2.25
-.75/1 any 1 gallon milk= $1.50 each
I ad-matched the Shredded Cheese 8 0z bags with Walgreens for $1.50 each.
-$1/any 2 lb cheese, shredded, block or cube= $1.25 per bag.
Some of you may know how much I LOVE after-holiday sales at Walmart!
I took advantage of the 50% discount and great availability and variety to get this electric jack o lantern, warning tape, garland, and large wreath. This is such a great way to get your festive supplies for any holiday or season. The only crappy part is waiting a whole year to use them! But it is such fun when you open that holiday's tote a year later and see the new things you forgot about!
Every deal except the cheese, which goes through Saturday, will continue through Tuesday if you are ad-matching. Some of the produce prices however, are Wednesday/Thursday only prices if you go to the actual store.

My Review of Stokes grocery

The kids and I hit Stokes grocery store in Salem today. So many exciting deals for their grand opening!
I only went in for 4 things and ended up with a full grocery cart!
 Bananas 3 lb/$1
Lindsey Jumbo Olives .68
Child's Play candy $5.99
 Sunbelt granola bars $1.50
Frozen Veggies $1.28
Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts $1.39/lb
Kellogg's 10 pk Fruit Snacks  $1.00
12 ct Ice Cream Cups .78
Western Family Bagged Cereal $2.50
Diapers $6.19

So the employees were friendly, as were my fellow customers and it made the shopping experience so enjoyable! I highly recommend getting in there from now till the 7th to take advantage of these opening sales. It will be interesting to see how well they compete after this initial phase.
My one complaint about the store is that it is a bit tight. Getting around can be tricky. Overall though, a very good experience!
Plus they have Ace hardware in their store. Lots and lots of hardware isles just waiting to be explored!

The Dollar Store

I made a trip to the local dollar store today. I didn't have time to take a pic of the loot, but I just have to say, dollar stores are awesome! So many great deals if you're looking for the right things!
I get all of my allergy medicine there. It's a way better deal and works great. I needed raisins and found them there. Good size box too. I also grabbed a big bag of roasted, salted peanuts. What a steal! Even at Big Lots I would have paid 3x as much for the same!
I also desperately needed carpet stain spray. I grabbed two good size cans there. I've gotten them there before and they work great. :)
I looked at some walnuts but it was a really small bag. As I don't buy walnuts often, I will need to look around before I am sure it's a good deal. Walnuts are just plain expensive. I'm thinking my parents had the right idea with our giant walnut tree in California. I hated the associated chores then but I'd love to have it now!
I also grabbed two packs of plastic cereal bowls for the kids. We go through bowls, cups and spoons at an unsettling rate....
I also grabbed a nice little 2-sided bottle brush to put away for the new baby. Gathering things a little at a time.
So..... I highly recommend checking out your dollar store. You may be really surprised at what you find there! Yes, there is also a lot of cheap crap. Be wise and the dollar store can save you a lot of money on things you need anyway!

Ad matching @ Walmart

The fam and I hit Walmart yesterday to do some ad-matching. I was really pleased with how well I did, without using a single coupon.
The frame was $3, regular price. The Lender's bagels are $1.50 per bag and you can find them in the refrigerated section near the cream cheese. Lender's are my favorite!
Bags of salad: .78 each. 4lb corn tortillas: $3.07.
The final regular price item was the bread at $1.25 per loaf. Not amazing, but it was ok since we saved so much elsewhere.

Now for ad-matches:
5 doz Eggs $5.98 @ Rancho Market

  Cilantro: 5/.99 @ Rancho
Milk $1.99 each @ Rancho
Oranges 5 lb/.99 @ Rancho
Grapes .78/lb @ Rancho
Anaheim Peppers 5 lb/.99 @ Rancho
1 lb baby Carrots $1 @ Fresh Market

I got out of there spending less than $30. I'm a happy camper. :) These prices end Tuesday. Don't miss out!!

This is a really great week for Walgreen's. You don't wanna miss out! The Cottonelle toilet paper is a month long deal, so you will have time on that one. Ps. The Springville store was really well stocked with it and several of the deal items.
I ended up with an extra $3 RR that I will use later this week. With that considered, I got like $50 worth of goods for around $15. Not too shabby. :) And I was doing all of this on the fly. If I had had it all planned out, like the order of my transactions, I am sure I would have saved even more. So word to the wise, PLAN YOUR TRANSACTIONS AHEAD OF TIME!!!

More Great Junk!

Last Monday I was in Springville to hit Walgreen's. On the way home, I noticed something sticking out of a garbage can, so I turned around and went back. It was a walking activity chair for babies. It was in good shape but really, really dirty! I was not in the mood to clean it up, but I figured I'd at least see what else was in there.

I found a pink ball, a sippy cup, fishy bath toy, a walrus, and a bunch of lovely plastic hangers. Everything needed to be bleached of course, but overall, a great find!! Makes me really look forward to garbage day coming tomorrow!
Sincerely,
A happy scrounge

Today @ Savers and Walmart

I finally got too darn frustrated with my printer and decided to find a new one. I found one on Walmart.com and the site said it was available at the AF store. I was going to be up in Orem anyway to hit Saver's, so I figured I'd just hop to AF to grab the printer. Word to the wise: the site is NOT accurate! The Canon printer listed for $28 was not in fact available at that store. There wasn't even a home for it. I ended up getting the $38 Canon all in one.

I also found a clearance pair of glittery flip flops for my daughter for .50 and grabbed a 4 pk of Pediasure Sidekicks for my son. They cost $5.97 and I used a -$3/1 coupon to get them for $2.97. That coupon expires on the 30th, so I am going to hunt for some more and go stock up on them!

Saver's
You know how much I love Saver's Monday deals! We got up there early with my sister in law, but apparently everybody had the same idea as us! Some things had plenty of selection with the appropriate colored tags, others had already been picked over. I still think we did really well over all. :)
I found one full set of jammies and two pair of pants. My mother in law and I are going to be making tops out of flannel and fleece that we already have. I am so excited for the project! There was a lot of selection in jammies this week, but not many at the deal price. I did get the full set jammies for just .99 though and the pants were $1.99 each and are really thick and in great condition.
I also have a pattern for fleece sweaters and jackets that I am going to attempt to make. I found these four great sweaters though at really low prices, all great quality, plus the two pair of sweats pants.
These four long sleeve shirts for my daughter were all just .99 each!!
 She likes them. :)
I found these three fabulous dresses. The pink one, an Old Navy dress was just .99! The all black was half price and came to $1.50. The black and red dress was just $1.99. All in fabulous condition!
For me, I found a nice long sleeved tee that will likely fit another month or two and then I can put it away for post baby me. :) These two maternity tops were a splurge: $5.00 each. Once they are ironed, they will be gorgeous! So excited for my upcoming belly and getting to wear these great tops! :)
It feels so great to be back in action! So sick of being sick!! I have so many things to catch up on and get done, just gotta take it one thing at a time. Recently I have been really inspired by Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Little House series. Even during these last two rough weeks of that silly head cold, I have still been more productive than I expected, thanks to her and her mother's example. And now that I am well and only dealing with morning sickness, I feel all fired up and ready to get some awesome things done!! Sewing projects galore!! Winterizing my yard, cooking adventures of many varieties, fall cleaning, and more! And of course, hunting for deals!!!! STAY TUNED!
